Foundation Engineering Overview

The Foundation Engineering Certificate teaches students a broad range of introductory technical courses. The foundation engineering course will help students to reach a GCE 'A' level equivalent standard.

Subject Outline: Foundation Engineering

All Foundation Certificate courses at Glasgow International College contain two elements:

Academic Skills Modules

Develop key academic skills including research, writing, presentation and analysis skills.

Foundation Engineering Subject Modules

The subject modules cover the basics of your chosen area of study to provide you with a comprehensive foundation engineering education. You will then advance to a more specialised study focusing on the topics and skills that you will need most in your chosen undergraduate degree course.

English language tuition is also provided for students who need it.

All modules are specifically designed to meet the needs of international foundation engineering students. The foundation engineering modules are taught with your progression to the University of Glasgow in mind.

Progression to the University of Glasgow

The Foundation Engineering Certificate is equivalent to Year 1 of an undergraduate degree course at the University of Glasgow.

Upon successful completion of the Foundation Engineering course to the required level you will progress directly into Year 2 of your chosen University of Glasgow degree course.

Subject Module

Foundation Engineering Course Outline (2 term*)

Three core academic skills modules:
  • Skills for Study 1, 2 and 3
Two core English Language modules:
  • Language for study 2 and 3
Two core subject modules:
  • Foundation Mathematics
  • Fundamentals of Science
Three Engineering pathway modules:
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Basic Engineering
  • Physical Sciences

* 3 term coures contain additional English language modules.

Progression Route

Foundation Engineering Progression Routes

Progression is either to Year 2 of a University of Glasgow degree course or to the Diploma in Engineering and then Year 3 of a University of Glasgow degree course.

Progression to the University of Glasgow is guaranteed provided you successfully complete your Glasgow International College course(s) at the required level.

The following progression routes are offered:

Direct entry to Year 2 of:

 

Entry to Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical) and then direct entry to Year 3 of:

 

Entry to Diploma in Engineering (Electronics and Electrical) and then direct entry to Year 3 of:

* Joint Course with Glasgow School of Art.

** Course begins at UoG in September 2012 so available for articulation from Sept 2013
